USING THE ONLINE DOCUMENTATION
for
Panther
Version 4.25+

ONLINE DOCUMENTATION ISSUES

You can access the Panther online documentation in the following ways:

q       From the Prolifics corporate Web site at http://docs.prolifics.com/panther/.

q       From the Panther Documentation CD. Click on the following file to access the documentation home page:
CD ROM Drive:
\docs\index.htm

The documentation CD includes Web-browsable HTML and easy to print Adobe Acrobat PDF documentation for the Panther product.

q       From the distribution

Note for Netscape Users Only: If your CLASSPATH variable must be set, you must access the web site by typing the URL in the Location field or by using an existing (file or Web server) bookmark to the web site. If you access the web site from Explorer or use File®Open from your Netscape browser, the search tool will return an error message.

Copying the Product Documentation to Your System

q       You can copy the online documentation contents to a local drive for better response time.

q       You can make the CD's content available on the network, position the CD in a server CD reader and designate it as shared. This is an alternative to taking up approximately 1.3 MB on the server's hard drive.

q       You can copy the online documentation CD contents to a Web server on your corporate Intranet. For more information about using a Web server, see "Using UNC Pathnames" in this document.

Printing from a Web Browser

You can print a copy of the online documents, one file at a time, from your Web browser. Before you print, make sure that the chapter or appendix you want to print is displayed and selected in your browser. We recommend the Adobe Acrobat PDF format as a better format for printing hard copies of the Panther for IBM WebSphere documentation, instead of printing HTML files from the browser.

Printing Adobe Acrobat PDF Files

The Panther documentation includes Adobe Acrobat PDF files of all of the online documents. You can use the Adobe Acrobat Reader to print all or a portion of each document, in the following way.

1.       On the Panther online documentation, click the Library button or click the Select a Guide drop down menu.

2.       Scroll to the document you want to print.

3.       Select PDF format for that guide to open up the Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Note: If you have problems printing from Acrobat Reader, refer to the support section of the Adobe website (www.adobe.com) for the Troubleshooting Printing Problems in Acrobat Reader for Windows.

LIMITATIONS OF THE ONLINE DOCUMENTATION CD SEARCH TOOL

The Panther for IBM WebSphere documentation CD includes a standalone Java search applet to assist you in finding topics. Following are the limitations of the search applet:

q       A Software Bug and Patch for Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0-A software bug in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0, for which there is a patch available, can affect applets, including the Panther for IBM WebSphere documentation search applet. This bug may also affect later builds of the Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x browser. Some error messages you may receive are: "Error occurred" or "No Matches Found," as well as the following message in the Java log: java.io.IOException: InternetReadFile at com/ms/net/wininet/WininetInputStream.read...
To run the QuestAgent search applet from a web site in Internet Explorer 5.0 you need the current Microsoft Java Build 3193. You can download the Microsoft Java update from the following URL:
http://www.microsoft.com/java/download/32updates.htm.

q       Bad Magic Number Error-The Java Virtual Machine (JVM) used in former versions of Netscape, such as, Netscape 4.0, may encounter problems reloading the Java search applet if it was accessed earlier in your browser session. If this happens, you may get the following error: Applet SearchApplet can't start: error: java.lang.ClassFormatError: Bad magic number. To avoid this error in Netscape 4.0, use the Back button of your browser, instead of the documentation Search button, to reaccess an already loaded search page. You can also upgrade to the latest Netscape version for your platform.

Using UNC Pathnames

The Java search applet on the Panther for IBM WebSphere online documentation CD uses a precompiled database of topics. Use one of these options to access the online documentation CD search tool:

q       Use the CD on a local CD reader.

q       Copy the CD's content to a local drive on your system.

q       Map a network drive to a remote, shared device that contains the CD or a copy of the CD content; in your browser, use the network drive to find and open the webindex.htm file in the CD: \docs\websphere\v4_25\ directory.

q       Copy the CD's content to a Web server on your corporate Intranet. Make sure that webindex.htm is the default filename used by the Web server software. The
\docs\websphere\v4_25\ directory of the Panther for IBM WebSphere documentation CD contains a webindex.htm file; which is the documentation home page. If your Web server software does not allow you to use a file named index.htm , make a copy of index.htm and rename the copy to the default file name you must use, such as default.htm. Keep both the index.htm file and the copied file in the same directory.

You cannot use the search applet if you accessed the CD or a copy of its content through a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path. For example, the Windows NT Network Neighborhood uses UNC paths. The search applet does not interpret the relative paths to the matched, target *.htm pages because the UNC path is added to the beginning of each link. Use one of the four recommended methods described in the preceding list.

You can use UNC paths for all other relative hyperlinks on the CD, such as accessing the documentation CD on a Network Neighborhood system's shared CD device. Only the search tool results list is affected by this UNC limitation.

Modifying the CLASSPATH Environment Variable

On some UNIX platforms, you may receive a browser error when you open the online documentation CD's Search page. For example:

Unable to start a java applet: Can't find 'javaXX.jar' in your CLASSPATH.

If the search applet does not work on your UNIX platform:

q       Use the latest Netscape browser for the platform

q       Add the Netscape Java Archive (JAR) file to your CLASSPATH environment variable. (The path to the JAR file is in the directory in which you installed Netscape. For example:

CLASSPATH=mytools/netscape/communicator/program/java/classes/javaXX.jar

q       After modifying the CLASSPATH variable, exit Netscape. Restart Netscape in the updated environment. After accessing the Search page, the search tool will work properly.
